Nutrition education should help readers understand evidence, uncertainty and context. AI-generated explanations need the same careful review as any other secondary source.
Ask what the evidence actually shows
A statement about a compound’s laboratory activity is different from a demonstrated benefit in people. When reading about functional foods or nutraceuticals, identify the study design, population, dose or exposure, outcome and limitations before applying the conclusion.
The selected research page links to reviews on taurine and stilbenes. These publications provide research context; they are not individual treatment plans or instructions to use a supplement.
A useful role for AI
- Suggesting questions to ask while reading a paper
- Organizing a glossary of terms for a class
- Drafting an educational outline for source-based review
- Comparing the questions addressed by different studies
Verify every cited study and important claim against the original source. A plausible explanation or invented reference can create false confidence, especially when it concerns disease, medicines or supplements.
Questions for evaluating a health claim
- Is the claim about a food, a supplement or a treatment?
- Does the evidence concern the same population and outcome?
- Are the results consistent across suitable studies?
- Are uncertainty, adverse effects and conflicts of interest considered?
- Does the wording go beyond what the evidence supports?
